Spanish Works of Literature That Will Help You Speak the Language
 Karla Davisio
 21 April 2020

Reading literature is a fantastic way to increase your understanding of a foreign language. Books can help you improve your paper writings skills, vocabulary and spelling, contextualize grammatical forms, and exercise various critical thinking skills. And reading in another language need not be tedious—there are numerous Spanish-language works that can facilitate learning and entertain at the same time."Como Agua Para Chocolate" (Like Water for Chocolate) by Laura EsquivelThis popular Mexican novel was published in 1989. In "Como Agua Para Chocolate," the main character and narrator, a young woman named Tita, finds herself in a painful situation. Tita is in love with Pedro, but Tita's mother will not allow their relationship, as she believes it is the duty of the youngest daughter to care for her mother through old age. Thus, in order to remain in contact with Tita, Pedro instead marries her sister, Rosaura. Rosaura gives birth to a child named Roberto. When Rosaura is unable to nurse Roberto, Tita cares for and nourishes the baby boy. As a result, Tita becomes deeply attached to Roberto, and she continues to love Pedro despite various complications. Each chapter of "Como Agua Para Chocolate" begins with a traditional Mexican recipe. The author includes these recipes to emphasize the importance of the kitchen in Tita's life. Tita, in fact, is an excellent chef, and she channels her frustration into her cooking. Tita's creations always reflect her mood, and they fill an artistic and emotional gap inside her. This novel is thus both a romance and a foray into Mexican culture. "Como Agua Para Chocolate" is beautifully written and is likely to affect readers in a profound way."Cajas de Carton" (Cardboard Boxes) by Francisco Jimenez"Cajas de Carton" (or "The Circuit: Stories from the Life of a Migrant Child") tells the poignant tale of a migrant family from Mexico who moves to the United States in search of work, as well as a better life. The book is narrated from the point-of-view of Panchito, an intelligent young boy who is the author himself (Francisco Jimenez). The humble family of four settles in the agricultural region of California, relocating as often as necessary to harvest seasonal crops. As time passes, the family gradually grows. The novel also explores Panchito's struggle with the English language. The life of Panchito and his family is characterized by constant change, hardship, and poverty. However, despite the legal, economic, and cultural difficulties they face, the family remains united. "Cajas de Carton" is a touching and relevant book whose brevity and conciseness attracts many readers."Naufragios" (Shipwrecked) by Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca"Naufragios" is a one-of-a-kind sixteenth century text written by the Spanish conquistador Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca. "Naufragios" describes the incredible adventures of four Spaniards who were shipwrecked in the New World, survivors from a ship that was originally sailing to Florida. For years, the European men lived among Native Americans before journeying west. "Naufragios" is a must-read for anyone interested in global history and the development of the Spanish language. In fact, this text features several of the first indigenous words that were incorporated into Spanish. The language in this book is likely to be challenging for some readers, as it is centuries old, but "Naufragios" is certainly worth reading for its cultural and historical importance.

Q:Please give details about your initial education and forming years of life. A: I am just a 12 year old school boy. I joined school at a normal age; but two roads diverged into the woods and I took the one less travelled by. I guess that has made the difference. I still vividly remember when I used to hold that ABC book upside down but read with as much determination as a NEET or JEE student. Slowly but steadily, I became civilized (Mentally) and particular.  The development of the mind resulted in improved ethics and a unique way of thinking.                Q: How did you get interested in literature? What inspired you to write?  A: I first got exposed and associated with literature with this book called “PINNOCHIO”. It is a very popular story, and it has been adapted into movies too.Though Carlo Collodi had used much simplified language, but for then me being a first or second grader, it was literature to me. With this I developed the aptitude for reading literature (but now the level has changed from Collodi to Poe, though)I can say that my dedication towards reading inspired me to write. I never thought about writing poems till sixth grade. But rather this should be modified to “who inspired you to write”. If that’s the question, I can blindly say my father. He is the one who improved my vocabulary to this extent.Q: What difficulties did you have to face with respect to literary work? A: Talking of difficulties, my biggest enemy is noise. I cannot concentrate when there is unnecessary sound. But the difficulty is never running out of fuel. For I am a poetry man, my point of view for literature is totally different. Q: What is your view about the present-day literary work?Present literature is a mixture or different styles of writing. Writers like Anand Neelkanthan, Amish, and Chetan Bhagat etc. have their own way of weaving their yarn, but a little essence of other styles is prevalent. I cannot compare their skills because nowadays only two to three authors from the same genre are seen on the book rack and all the writers I mentioned are of different genres.Q: Do you think that the emergence of digital and social media has given a new opportunity to creative writers? A: Digital media has provided a huge platform for young and aspiring writers like me. There are lakhs like me striving for recognition, and it has affected many lives. But social media has to be used for writing very carefully. If any inappropriate content is written and posted on social media, it can be a negative sign for the writer’s upcoming journey.Q: Please tell us something about your literary work.A: This my first attempt into the world of literature. All I can tell about my literary work is that it is a poetry collection with themes that touch every aspect of life.Q: What was your first literary work and how was it published? A: My first book is about to be published in two months or so. I am very excited about it.Q: How many ways literature can contribute to society in future?A: In future, literature can contribute to all fields such as science and commerce and also in other businesses. Literature will be ergonomic.Q: Where do you see yourself after 5 years in the literary world?A: In 5 years I picture myself as a successful published author. Though not a big writer, but at least I will not go unnoticed in a crowd.Q: What ways would you suggest on building a community for poets?A: I was planning to build a society for poets’ right after seeing the movie dead poets’ society. My idea is that first a digital platform should be used to create a community for poets and writers and then there should be meetings, orientations, seminars etc.Q: What message would you like to give to aspiring new writers? A: I would like to convey this message to the young aspiring writers like me:HOLD ON TO YOUR DREAMS,DON’T LET THEM DIE,WITHPUT THEM,WE ARE BIRDS THAT CANNOT FLY.Q: How was your experience of writing on StoryMirror? A: My experience on writing on storyMirror has been a memorable one. StoryMirror has provided me a platform on which I can let my ideas and words at stray. I will continue writing on StoryMirror.Q: Would you like to say something about StoryMirror? A: StoryMirror is a great initiative. Q: Please give details about your initial education and forming years of life.A: I completed my schooling, pre-university & undergraduate degree in Bangalore & have been working for 5 years. The forming years of my life were quite good to an extent though, childhood being the best part of life we all cherish inspite of the chances missed and exposure we could have had.Q: How did you get interested in literature? What inspired you to write? A: I used to browse through a couple of motivational quotes or thoughts & came across and also read few poems, novels written by various Authors in English, Kannada & Hindi languages. It helped me a lot to stay optimistic with hope. The writings of Maya Ahmed (author/writer) influenced me a lot & inspired me which is the main source of interest in literature.Q: What difficulties did you have to face with respect to literary work? A: The world of literature is very vast in itself. We have seen a lot of great Writers & their work, contribution. I wanted to start writing but had zero idea and wasn't confident enough. It all started when I was depressed over again, not knowing what to do.. browsed through a number of blogs, website & apps for writing. Found a nice platform “Mirakee”, just started writing slowly with whatever thoughts came to my mind.Q: What is your view about the present-day literary work? A: I feel the ancient work was full of meaning. Whatever you touch - from poems, stories, scriptures etc is filled with depth & message. One of many to mention - poems written by the eminent & finest poet of 19th century, Robert Frost. Nowadays, literature is good but modernized & uses more complex words whilst the message is lost inside it. Can't conclude since the above opinion is based on few readings. I guess A reader is the best critic to comment on this.Q: Do you think that the emergence of digital and social media has given a new opportunity to creative writers? A: Yes, digital media in this generation has given opportunities for everyone interested in writing but we must create a new platform to encourage young writers and take literary work to another level like other forms of art.Q: Please tell us something about your literary work. A: Most of what I write revolves around the thoughts that arise in mind due to few situations and things happening around, to the lessons learnt from life experiences till date. Subject plays a major role. that's how most of the poems are born & takes life. I don't know many complicated words to be used & also various forms of poems. My basic idea of writing is that it should at least be useful to those who read & must convey good message or meaning.Q: What was your first literary work and how was it published? A: I'm just a soul interested in literature and writing has given me lot of peace and happiness. I don't have my literary work published yet. The first piece of story/poem I wrote was “One Winter Morning” (have submitted in StoryMirror & waiting for content approval). Still a learner. Long way to go.Q: How many ways literature can contribute to society in future? A: Literature has the ability to awaken minds of lot of people in many ways. It is the base or evidence to history. Ancient literature, stories, drama, poetries, scientific work/research have the potential to impact the future & generations to come.Q: Where do you see yourself after 5 years in the literary world? A: As stated earlier, I'm still a learner in this vast ocean of literature. It's a dream to see ourselves better & wise while we continue our journey. Let's see… until then I'll keep writing & improving but will never stop what's started.Q: What ways would you suggest to build a community for poets? A: We must have mentors and fellow writers to correct us and provide inputs. It will surely impact in order to improve & also serves as encouragement which will give us new hope and interest to write more.Q: What message would you like to give to aspiring new writers? A: Keep learning and just start writing. We never know how far it will take us or we can go but the first step to start the journey is within our hands. When I, who thought that I wouldn't be able to do anything can write. Then anybody can write. You have the potential, will power & strength within you. Never let it die. Keep watering it without any expectations.Q: How was your experience of writing on StoryMirror? A: Initially it was difficult, as I was used to only one writing platform/app. It's been so good so far. *NICE , to sum up.Q: Would you like to say something about StoryMirror? A: Excellent platform and interactive (in terms of communication, support, competitions & encouraging writers). I would like to Thank, Shrestha for introducing me to StoryMirror & let me participate in “Be a poem” competition. Q:Please give details about your initial education and forming years of life. A: Currently I am studying in class 9. Till this day I've written over 30 poems, and the credit goes to the interest I have in literature and the way I somehow live my life to the fullest by being anxious.Q: How did you get interested in literature? What inspired you to write?  A: Nothing specifically inspired me to write for there is a lot going around in teenage years. Being an amateur in writer, I have a lot to face now. Come what may, my words won't be wasted. Q: What is your view about the present-day literary work? A: As times change, so does the face of literature. Though not so large in number, but there are various rising patrons publishing their own little worlds. Poets like me have new assets of the digital and social media. But sometimes these forums just mentally freeze a person as literature is an overwhelming field.Q: Please tell us something about your literary work. A: My poems are basically like a heart that sings alone. This includes narrating the aesthetics of some incidents, unanswered questions and  whimsical daydreams. Some of my literary works reflect self-assessments done at 3 am, uncertain love interests, phases of life, ghosts of people that are still alive, and deep messages conveyed through simple words. And the rest are stupid desires, abstracts, negative glimpses, anxious drama, confessions, longing memories, unspoken words, etc. I have tried to fit them in various poetic styles such as haiku, limerick, acrostic, sonnet, sometime free verses or created my own styles. Q: What was your first literary work and how was it published?A: My first literary work was a small Marathi poem that I wrote when I was 8, though I don't have it written somewhere but I do remember it. After that I hadn't written poems and stories for some 4 years, except some school homework.Q: How many ways literature can contribute to society in future?A: Literature contributes to the society in various ways that we don't even realize. On a smaller level, it might make someone's day and on a larger level, it acts like a eternal communication. To be honest, I do not like visualizing myself with a all 'down to the earth' attitude. I'll go where my poems will get me, also, I am considering to publish my poetry collection. I would suggest the build up a community where a every person gets recognition due to his/her poetic excellence and not the other way round where a poem gets recognition due to its poet/poetess. I am, myself, a aspiring writer and from the little experience I have, I would suggest them to write as per their own terms and conditions, not necessarily tracing some great writer's steps. Initially the context stays simple and text seems jumbled but as it moves forward, context deepens and words get cleared. One's written works are little parts of one's mind you give to the world.Q: How was your experience of writing on StoryMirror?  A: I am enjoying my experience with StoryMirror.I would like to add that, earlier I would surf through internet searching for writing communities based in India and would always end up on a abroad or almost closed writing communities. I am really grateful for coming across and being a part of StoryMirror and the respective contests, for being a platform for me to showcase my creativity.Q: Would you like to say something about StoryMirror? A: Also, thank you for providing me with the opportunity to share my views and opinions through this interview. Here is the link to read my content https://storymirror.com/profile/e2cgoydy/5-crookedfingers/poems

What inspired you to write?  A: As a child I used love listening to Ramayana and Mahabharata, both of which my mother used to recite. And finally, Khaled Hosseini made me delve deep into literature.I never really knew I could compose stories until my the then Creative writing professor- Shrabani Ma'am announced “... chocolate as a reward for the first three best creative works.” Better to say Chocolate acted as a muse and inspired me to use pen instead of sword, to strikeQ: What difficulties did you have to face with respect to literary work? A: Sometimes a few Literary works did turn out to be a bit less interesting.Q: What is your view about the present-day literary work? A: I think it’s more straightforward than the previous works.Q: Do you think that the emergence of digital and social media has given a new opportunity to creative writers? A: Absolutely, the emergence of digital and social media has made it easier for the writers who cant really afford the expenses of publishing their works. People can now simply post their works in social platforms and communicate with the rest of the world. Every literary text is...a mosaic of quotations... as said by Julia Kristeva, I think social and digital media helps bring the right design out of this mosaicQ: Please tell us something about your literary work. A: I am very restless, and thus, try to keep my compositions very concise as it would be definitely be viewed by restless people like me. Surendra literature on the back drop of history

Past of the present has its foundation on the present of past and what is not present becomes past in the coming days, a page in history. If ancient history, medieval history and pre and post independence history of India are taken as base, many stories pass through the screen of memory and many characters in the stories come to front. That history contains from truth and on the base of the truth, rests some legend. The so called legends are developed into full fledged literature embracing major and minor characters. That is the special trait of Mr. Surendra Mohanty.Literature has different divisions consisting of Autobiography, Biography, Short stories, Essays and Novels. To look at these divisions of Oriya literature, would reveal the literary maturity and artful handling of them by this versatile writer. Rather it can be told that there is no easier and developed medium to recollect history on path of readers other than the writings of Sri Mohanty. Surendra literature has an identity of its own on its mythological and historical background.SHORT STORY SECTIONThe short stories days back to the emancipation of the Jews under the leadership of Mojes, from the shackles of Egyptian empire, to the rise of Orissan Empire, its history laden with rise and fall, fortune and bad days with rich historical knowledge. The short story collection ‘Kabi O Nartaki’ is based on mythological and historical characters.BIOGRAPHYStarting of British occupation of Orissa in 1803, and decline of Orissa nationalism till 1903, the declaration of regeneration and rebirth of it from the platforms of Utkal Sammilani the history of Orissa over a century is epitome in the Biography of Utkal Gourav Madhu Babu ‘Shatabdira Surya’ is unique.Surendra Mohanty’s autobiography ‘Patha o Pruthibi’ discloses the declining trend of values and morals of the post political landscape of India as well as Orissa.NOVELSHis milestone creations ‘Neela Saila’, ‘Neeladri Bijaya’, ‘Krishnabenire Sandhya’ on the background of 16th century history of Orissa Gajapati kingdom give inklings of Orissa history, its achievement and subsequent disintegration which revolves round the great lord Jagannath. On the other hand, his novels ‘Andha Diganta’, ‘Neti Neti’ on the back drop of British rule, pre and post independent Orissa highlights the ups and downs in political and social life.Be it a case of flood or famine, where individuals are treated like pawns on the political chess board, his writings represents the soul of oppressed, mute individuals, their silent protest on established moorings of society and indifferent bureaucracy. His literature had the echoes of unfulfilled dreams, aspirations, frustrations of the common man as its background and foundation. This will offer an interesting subject to be looked into and to be researched.
