Trekking Vs. Hiking: How to Choose The Best One For You
 Manmohan Singh
 9 October 2019

Hiking and trekking are terms often used interchangeably. If you are an adventurer you might know the difference between the two. Both involve walking but hiking lasts for a much shorter time than trekking. The type of terrain and technical difficulty are where the differences in hiking and trekking lie.The two share few similarities but are different from each other. It is important to understand the differences between hiking and trekking and keep in mind to choose the best one for yourself.  This article brings the answer to your question of how to choose the best one for you between trekking and hiking:HikingHiking includes long hours of walking and is easier as it does not involve climbing skills and anyone will be able to do it. The level of difficulty of hikes varies but it is not too difficult for a person to pursue. If you are thinking to go for an adventure and trekking seems too difficult and time taking, you can start by taking a hike. Hiking does not involve any walking or overnight equipment to carry. If you are looking for hiking, then Nepal hiking tours offers budget friendly packages in the serene mountains with amazing experiences. If you want to experience adventure but are not up for many days that trekking involves and also you are scared, then hiking might be a convenient option for you. Hiking is a wonderful stress buster with minimum risk involved, away from busy life where you can detox yourself and breathe some fresh air and stay in the arms of nature for a while.Much of technical knowledge is not required, if you are physically fit, a hike is waiting for you to explore. TrekkingTrekking lasts for many days and requires physical fitness as it can be more demanding on the body. It involves more challenges than hiking as it lasts for more days. So, if you are an adventure junkie and like the adrenaline rush, then trekking is meant for you. Before planning a trek various factors have to be kept in mind like physical fitness, number of days involved and season. Generally, you will have to camp while trekking so it involves food and equipments.Trekking provides you a wider picture of nature as it involves climbing high altitudes and mountains. If you are a yoga lover, you can choose trekking tours that involves yoga to have a combination of experiences of both yoga and trekking. If you are a trekking enthusiast or want to try out trekking for the first time then Nepal trekking tours offer a range of packages depending upon the number of days and budget. Trekking tours packages are done in groups and as it lasts for a number of days you will be able to make new friends along the way and get to know about the culture and flora and fauna of that specific area. If you want to take the road less traveled then Mustang trekking tours might be right for you. It is a trek in the remote mountains of Nepal. The entire topography of Mustang is different from the other parts of Nepal which makes it a ‘must go to’ place for a trek.   You will have time to interact with the locals on a trekking tour where you can learn about their food, language, tradition and culture. Trekking will transform you physically and mentally. You will learn about your body.Everest Base Camp Trek, Annapurna Base Camp Trek, Inca Trail, etc. are some of the most popular treks.“It’s not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves.”  - Sir Edmund Hillary

How is Trekking Beneficial to Your Mind and Soul?
 Manmohan Singh
 6 May 2019

Much like yoga,Trekking is an exercise that brings you together the body and the mind And makes your spirits shine, With the nurturing and the taming of your mind, You better the feelings that are food for your soul.Like yoga; in its process and exercise, trekking has a lot to do with breath-work and breath-control leading to mind control. The process of trekking then, further goes on to healing and fixing the energy loopholes of your being. The exercise of trekking is getting popular everywhere in the world. India and Nepal, the areas that are close to the Himalayas are in the spotlight because wisdom comes down from the great Himalayas to these lands. There are a plenty of trekking destination in India, and even more difficult trekking destinations in Nepal. The Annapurna base camp trek in Khandruk, Nepal is a doable and yet difficult trek that I recommend people to participate in.I will go as far as to say that trekking is a meditation and that’s because as widely it is believed that meditation requires one to be still and calm and composed; that may not be the entirety of meditation. Meditation is a practice that we do to activate our minds that has been either focusing on certain things too much, or been too relaxed or out of focus in its functioning.Meditation is essentially a practice that makes your concentration power more and more flexible and stronger. By explanation, concentration is the power of being able to contract and expand your consciousness and hold it for as long as required. Our consciousness gets out of practice and things start to get monotonous. When we go for trekking, the mind is expected to achieve great levels of concentration because it demands the holding capacity of your concentration, which, if not present, will kill you on your trek. That’s why people who have a good hold of their concentration can take up more and more difficult treks. Hence trekking is a form of moving meditation. It can be justified that trekking is essentially yoga in consistent movement and a faster method of unraveling and opening up. If you trek for a living, your body will find itself in a perpetual state of movement, and the mind at rest and in control at all times.Trekking demands for you to be mentally present at all times, or else your reality will be altered very easily and you may lose consciousness, which is why you may find trekkers walking silently in concentration. So what happens when we calm our minds and trek silently? We make our minds more and more alert so that it helps channelize all the energy in the body to be utilized by the physical activity! When your mind is calm and focused and your body is in movement, you become the humblest version of yourself at that moment because you are focusing on the bare necessities to keep you alive and walking ahead. And when humans get what they need and not what they greed, people are humbler and in greater harmony with themselves and each other. It will not be surprising to say that people, who trek as a lifestyle choice, live longer and live life in its full essence because all they have to do is walk away and find another strange place to find comfort in. What happens when you are trekking is that you are meditating with each step, your mind is calm, your body is in movement and your spirits are enriched versions which is how things are supposed to be in life, where people are only caring for their necessities and not for their greed. But the city life has introduced a lot of greed and in times when we exist in satisfaction, we may encounter moments of greed which leads our body and soul in the direction to achieve that greed that we inculcated in us. What we are doing while trekking is focusing on the bare necessities of life. With trekking you will go the natural way, and the natural way always leads to more satisfaction than running madly after something that you don’t even need. The “time” that you buy, is the “age” you have bought for yourself to live.Trekking does have tremendous scope for spiritual growth as well. Wisdom comes with the patience that we are willing to give to the things that are necessary for us, after we have bought all that time from meditating in movement. We are free to spend it on what may be an essential knowledge to pass down to your next generation. Whatever knowledge that people gain from spending time on gaining it, internalizes in our body and down to our genes...So you decide what information and knowledge you want to pass on to the coming generation. Trekking is extremely beneficial for your mind body and soul because when you are on a trek, you are feeding your entire being with all the goodness it needs internally and externally’ with every step you take, the problems you face on this journey are different from not meeting a project deadline…. You see, you’re more worried about collecting enough firewood to grant yourselves a heart-warming bon-fire when you want to take rest.

5 Things to Avoid in Food During Trekking
 Manmohan Singh
 30 May 2019

Trekking is a holistic activity that takes you to places that are unbelievably picturesque. Places that you may have seen in photographs and postcards. The glistening mountain tops and pristine lakes are not the only things that are tempting to the soul. The foods in these areas of the world are so different to the taste buds and very new to enthusiastic souls who like to discover these new things while travelling. The fun in travelling lies in these small discoveries that one makes. While trekking, one comes across so many kinds of mesmerising terrains and landscapes, the soul and the body is ready to accept all the good that the foods of the local area brings along in the course of the journey. Not just the food but the native cultures and traditions are rich, diverse and a segment of traditional beliefs that have passed down the ages. Nepal is a place that is known for the diverse amount of trekking trails and terrains, for trek enthusiasts to dwell in. The best part is that trekking in Nepal does not burn a huge hole in your pocket, that’s why Nepal is a favourite amongst enthusiasts. One of the most famous tracks for trekking is the Everest base camp trekking in Nepal. People, who want to get close to the highest mountain in the world, opt for this trekking trail once in Nepal. There is a long list of foods that you should eat while on a trekking trip, but there are 5 important foods and beverages that you must absolutely avoid while starting on a trekking journey. 1. Alcoholic beveragesConsumption of alcohol lowers your energy outlet and drags down your focus while trekking. More than anything, alcohol is a beverage that stirs your emotional levels and hampers the progress on your mental capacity on a trek. Trekking is an activity that requires your mind to be aware and alert at all times; a loss of one second of your attention span can lead to fatal accidents. It is worse if you go through a hangover before starting a lengthy trek.  It is true that people consume alcohol to ward off the chilling winds in a trek, but that is only really small quantities of alcohol. It is always better to celebrate with alcohol after the trek is over. 2. Cold meatsYou may have heard that meat is a very strong source of proteins and energy, but you may not know that you can obtain the same quantity of proteins and vitamins from so many kinds of vegetables. More than anything, why the consumption of meat is so bothersome is that, meat can be preserved and kept for inculcating flavour, and the proteins in the meat don’t survive for long. So, what you consume in the end is a dead flesh that has been cured for flavour. While trekking you need proteins and vitamins to keep you trekking in a consistent manner, it is not advisable to consume dead flesh while on a trek that needs you to produce the energy from within. Especially while on a trek to Nepal do not expect a lot of variety in meat. If you are used to eating beef forget that you will find beef anywhere, cow is the national animal of Nepal and it is highly offensive to consume beef or steak. 3. Carbonated drinksWhen on a trek you must take care of your abdomen and stomach. Try to eat foods that do not upset the stomach a lot. Especially consuming all natural based items is advisable. Carbonated drinks only serve for flavour and the taste buds while not being a very healthy option while on a trek. For energy boost and refreshment, try drinking natural vegan milks and fruit juices instead. 4. RiceEating rice in large amounts causes your stomach to swell and this makes it hard for you to carry your own weight on a trek. Rice is necessary for the carbohydrates that is provides but consuming too much out of hunger is not advised. This is because rice does not provide lot of roughage for exercising the abdomen. Rather breads like the traditional Nepali roti are full of proteins and roughage. 5. Processed foodsAny form of processed foods is likely to contain very less amounts of the vitamins of that particular food. Processed foods also contain traces of preservatives that are not beneficial for your energy flow. Avoid processed foods and try to consume more foods that can be naturally sourced, even if it lacks in flavour which is very unlikely, opt for natural foods, fruits and vegetables.  While on an important trek, or any trekking expedition for that matter, try to go as vegan or vegetarian as possible. The greens that you consume hold a lot more energy than meat and other alternatives you consume for proteins. There are a lot of foods that are essential for treks, and believe it or not, while on a trek, the simplest foods like rice, wheat and lentils are the best source of energy. The locals thrive on this kind of food and it is what keeps them surviving and it the best shape to be alive on these terrains. We may be tourists but the natives are locals they are one with the mountains and the natural surroundings. So follow their lead and do in Rome as the Romans do.

Corona Lockdown: A Yogic OpportunityThe whole world is facing the global pandemic of coronavirus outbreak. Not to mention we have come to such a point that we are now within the confines of our walls. Maintaining distance from one another and moreover isolating ourselves completely is the order of the day for all of us. In one way it seems that the medical world is combating a dangerous problem but as practitioners, this is a great time to be with self. The whole ideology and practice of yoga aims at diving within and seeking within. Consider that nature has given each one of us an opportunity to be with ourselves, know ourselves and contemplate ourselves as much as we can.All of us have ample time and as practitioners, before we used to make out schedules, switch routines and manage. Now you can imbibe the golden aspects of meditation and even contemplate the various kriyas and other yogic routines all day throughout. In fact, for a devoted practitioner, such self-contemplation and that too without the hassle of being bothered by anything external can work wonders. The practitioner of yogic cult sought the refuge of caves and isolated areas away from the societal setups, here we have an opportunity similar to be with ourselves and contemplate the glorious treasures our divine nature has a store in for us.In short practice as per your convenience, contemplate and go through the regimes and knowledge you always wanted to but had no time. Eat healthy, light and as pure and natural as ever since you have all the time to follow the yogic diet. What you will experience is that although it might seem s global catastrophe but actually it is a silent opportunity for all of us to become better and enhanced yogis because mother nature is also revitalizing itself.YOGA TTC IN RISHIKESHSanskar Yogashala is one of the Traditional  Yoga School in Rishikesh India which masters in certified courses of 100 Hours Yoga Teacher Training Course in Rishikesh India, 200 Hours Yoga Teacher Training Course in Rishikesh India, 300 hours Yoga Teacher Training Course in Rishikesh India and 500 hours Yoga Teacher Training in Rishikesh India. Sanskar Yogashala offers certified Traditional Hatha Yoga TTC in Rishikesh India, Ashtanga Yoga TTC in Rishikesh and Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training Course in Rishikesh India. Join Best Yoga Teacher Training Course in Rishikesh India.YOGA TEACHER TRAINING IN RISHIKESH INDIA Yoga Anatomy & PhysiologyComprehensive & deep study of postures anatomy, movements and the key systems of the body. All over the world, many trekkers enjoy the delight of the ancient science to boost their chance of succeeding on the trekking trails. Whether you are planning a trekking tour in Nepal or aspiring for a journey in the Alps, Yoga is the best way, to begin with. Even embracing Yoga during the tour can be extremely enjoying.Let’s talk about some of the most effective Yoga poses that help you prepare the body and mind for trekking.Ardha-UtkatasanaLet’s begin with the advanced version of Chair Pose. Ardha-Utkatasana is one of the finest ways to boost the strength of your legs and thighs muscles. Also known as the Standing Figure Four, the asana is practiced on one leg. While one foot is perfectly placed on the ground, the other leg finds itself on the knee. Although bending down in this position needs a lot of effort, it can be easily possible with regular practice. Balance is the key in both - the practice of Ardha-Utkatasana and Trekking.NatarajasanaThe vibrancy of Natarajasana can be understood by the fact that it is the cosmic dance form of Lord Shiva. Being a perfect practitioner of this asana means you are able to perform all kinds of physical activities. During the one-legged asana, the left toe is held by the left hand in the air while the right arm extends parallel to the ground. You should repeat the practice on the other side to complete the exercise. The practice tones almost all body parts and helps the body enjoy tremendous stability.ChakrasanaWelcome flexibility in your life to succeed as a trekker of the utmost level. Chakrasana is all about crossing the limits of the body and applying it to make a person internally strong. The whole body is in a circle-like position with the palms and toes balancing the body. The abdomen remains at the top during the asana. The asana is one of the finest ways to boost the flow of blood throughout the body. It also tones almost all muscles and bones of the body in the process.BakasanaBakasana is known as Crow pose, thanks to its imitation as a crow. The pair of palms holds the body weight while the body recoils in the air. Place your knees on the arms while making sure the buttocks are at the top. The exercise gives a lot of confidence to the practitioner, since it is not an easy task to hold the body on the palms. That mixture of power, confidence, and audacity can be the most important thing to have while trekking.Prasarita PadottanasanaPlace your feet wide apart (approx 2-3 ft) to indulge in a beautiful physical exercise that every avid trekker and hiker should practice. Bend in the forward direction to place the head on the mat. Make sure the knees don't bend in the process. Put your palms on the mat on either side of the head. It is an extremely amazing asana for getting prepared for a difficult level trek like Everest Base Camp Trek and GR 20.PadmasanaAt the end of a physical task, you need to relax. You want a moment or two of quietude in life to calm yourself down. Padmasana is probably the most astonishing way to relax and pacify your mind. The reason that makes Lotus Pose holds the upper hand over other restful exercises is that it comes with the additional benefit of stretching various body muscles. Just by sitting in Padmasana, one can feel complete silence as well as spinal strengthening. Chanting a few mantras helps you attain the state of soulfulness.

PaschimottanasanaThe Paschimottanasana is an advanced posture which the yogic practitioners frequently practice as it is believed and visualized that it helps and aids incomplete realization of the third chakra ( navel chakra). The posture needs to be done only when the practitioner has advanced to a good level of flexibility. Let us see the steps of practicing the intense dorsal stretch.Step-by-Step InstructionsStep 1. Start from the sit-up seated position( i.e. your legs stretched out rest on the ground while your upper body sits up making an angle of 90 degrees).Step 2. With both your ankles together and feet joined stretch out your arms straight and then move forward with your upper body to reach for the feet.Step 3. With both your arms you must reach and grasp both the soles of your feet completely. Doing so the upper body has now moved completely parallel to the resting stretched out legs.Step 4. Now finally once the legs have been grasped completely move your upper body including your head straight down so that the upper body now completely relaxes on the stretched-out legs.Step 5. Your face finds it’s placed within the folds of your legs somewhere near both the knees while the stretched out palms grasping the feet completely embrace the feet and your spine is completely stretched out while your upper body has moved 90 degrees complete to now lie down with your legs.Step 6. Stay in this posture for a few breathing cycles and then slowly and steadily come out of it. Coming back to the same position from where you started. Relax.Health Benefits of Paschimottanasana:1. A complete cleansing posture for your stomach and intestine. This posture has been aimed at realizing the navel chakra ( MANIPUR) which is related to digestive fire and intestinal organs.2. For anyone suffering from or facing VAAT(gaseous) problems of the stomach and intestine, this posture acts as an immediate reliever.3. Cleanses and stretches your urinary system as a whole. An important detoxification posture.4. With improvised practice moves your kundalini up from the third chakra and so on.5. Makes the back and the legs very flexible over a period of time.6. It is good for diabetic patients.Precautions:1. Make sure the movements and motions are fluid. Any mal-practice can cause muscular problems of the abdomen.2. Don’t attempt this posture if you lack the core strength and flexibility of the upper torso and spine.3. Attempt the posture under the guidance of a teacher. Once perfected can practice on your own.4. In the case of lower back problems or even jitteriness and weakness of body first practice beginners postures.YOGA TTC IN RISHIKESHSanskar Yogashala is one of the Traditional  Yoga School in Rishikesh India which masters in certified courses of 100 Hours Yoga Teacher Training Course in Rishikesh India, 200 Hours Yoga Teacher Training Course in Rishikesh India, 300 hours Yoga Teacher Training Course in Rishikesh India and 500 hours Yoga Teacher Training in Rishikesh India.Sanskar Yogashala offers certified Traditional Hatha Yoga TTC in Rishikesh India, Ashtanga Yoga TTC in Rishikesh and Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training Course in Rishikesh India.Join Best Yoga Teacher Training Course in Rishikesh India.YOGA TEACHER TRAINING IN RISHIKESH INDIA The 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training in Rishikesh, India at our school to become an RYT - 200 (registered yoga teacher) with Yogic food and accommodation is the best yoga teacher training course in Rishikesh for those who has done the beginner's course or basic practices. Here are some poses to help you during your trek and save you from the fatigue and anxiety.Bhujangasana (cobra pose): It opens the 4 Chakras in your body that reduces stress, fatigue, and tension. It strengthens your neck, shoulder, and upper back and helps in improving spinal mobility.Bhujangasana (cobra pose)How to:Lie on the floor on your stomach and make sure your toes touch each other.Move your hands at the front and make sure they are the same as the shoulder level.Gently lift your chest off the floor by placing your body weight on the palms.Look straight ahead and hold on for 30 seconds.Inhale as you elongate the sides of your body, then exhale, pressing your tailbone down. Press the lower tips of your shoulder downward while keeping the upper shoulder blades broad and open. You need to replicate cobra.Adho mukha svanasana (downward dog): It has very healing effects on the body, mind, and soul. This is a beginner level pose; it takes 1 to 3 minutes.Adho mukha svanasana (downward dog)How to:Stand on four limbs as your body looks like a table.Exhale and gently form a shape that looks like inverted ‘V’.Your hands should align with your shoulder, and your feet with your hips. Now, lift your tailbone skyward.Hold for a few seconds, then gently comes back in table position.Dhanurasana (bow pose): This pose gets its name from the archer’s bow. This pose is one of the 12 Hatha basic yoga poses. It improves your flexibility and highly beneficial for your back.Dhanurasana (bow pose)How to:Lie on the floor on your stomach. Keep your hips width apart and arm by your side.Bend your knees and bring them close to your hips. Grab your ankles from your hands.Inhale, and lift your chest off the ground. Pull your legs back.Concentrate on your breath and try to look stress-free a smile can help.Hold this pose nearly 20 to 30 seconds, release the ankle as exhale.Uttanasana (standing forward fold): Practicing Uttanasana could be very beneficial for you before going for trekking; it wakes up your hamstrings and makes your mind do work properly, because when you do this asana your head is near your heart that allows blood circulation to your brain instead of feet; cells rush and energize your body.Uttanasana (standing forward fold)How to:Stand straight keeping your hands rest on your hips and inhale.Soften your knees as you bend forward folding from your hips and exhale. Touch your knees, feel the stretch, hold on to few seconds as you want to release, contract the core of abdomen muscles, place your hands on the hip, rise slowly while elongation your body. Slowly stand up.Savasana (corpse pose): Savasana may look simple, but it is the hardest because you need to be completely relaxed; it helps you relieve from stress and provides you complete relaxation.
