The Best MedicineTopics of discussions with friends hover around different issues at different ages. As teenagers, we discussed about our challenges in learning, adolescent problems, etc.  In our youth, we discussed about our dreams of our future, life-partners, career, etc.  A few lucky ones discussed about their love affairs, which had happy ending!  Then came our middle age, when we were busy managing our families and careers and very rarely got to meet our friends.  Whenever we met, the discussion was about how we did the balancing act, our children’s responses, concerns about their education, behaviour and so on.  Children grew up and entered teens and then we had the challenge of handling them.  God knows whether our parents thought about this challenge so much, because the exposure that we had as teenagers was so limited.  Time passed and our children left homes in search of greener pastures.  They found their life partners and the focus now is on their new families.  This is a natural cycle but we all started feeling the pain of empty nests.  We were left to tend to our aged parents and hence when we meet people, what we mostly discuss is ‘health’ or rather ‘ill-health’!  It is not that death is the trend now and it never occurred in the yesteryears but death did not haunt us as much as it does now.  We keep hearing about the demise of the elders in the family, our friends, our colleagues and that keeps reminding us that the time is ticking away.  What haunts us more than death is the age-related complications before we actually embrace death!  Thus all we discuss is about exercise, prevention of certain chronic diseases, management of chronic diseases, weight-loss, diet, medicines, labs, hospitals, doctors - Oh!Do we really get respite from such thoughts and discussions?  We do, if only we go back in time!  How do we do that?  Thanks to technology, we are able to connect to our old friends, friends who can make us feel young!  Recently, we connected through WhatsApp and fifteen of us, who schooled together met up in Secunderabad!  Wow!  I tell you!  Nothing can be as invigorating as attending a school reunion!  Many of my classmates live in Hyderabad/Secunderabad and they took the lead and organised the reunion painstakingly.  We were lucky to get in touch with eight of our teachers.   We invited the teachers to our school Keyes High School, Secunderabad, which was established in 1881.  We felicitated them and sought their blessings.  They were so touched and were genuinely happy that we had all done well in our lives and careers and our children have excelled in their fields.  In fact, one of our teachers said, ‘Seeing your vigour and enthusiasm and your fresh memories I feel like gathering you all in a classroom and conducting a lecture!”We then spent hours in a service apartment, sharing all those golden memories, reliving every incident.  Each of us had something to share.  One of us is a gynaecologist and she shared many of her professional experiences in a very witty manner.  All of us spoke about our marriages and some of us had juicy news about love affairs!  We spoke about the play ‘Panchali Sabadam’, which our classmates had staged on the annual day! We pulled each other’s legs, laughed heartily and even danced and sang!  All of us went back in time by 46 years, putting aside all our present worries, pains and sorrows!  Three days just flew by.  When the time came for us to depart, we were all sad but all of us decided that we had to organise such meets more often in future, getting some more of our friends into the loop.  A few more friends have joined the group since then and are now very eagerly waiting for the second reunion, which we are organising in our garden city in December.  This is the b medicine for all ailments in this age!  Do take this medicine in higher dosages!

THE ROOM19 year old Nishantis worried as he enters the room with his mom, its 6 pm in the evening he has bunked a couple of classes to get to the venue, the sun is almost down but he still has his shades on.  He picks up a quiet corner further away from everyone and hopes the earth would swallow him.58 year old chatty Betty is on the other side. She is very blissful. She picks up conversations with almost everyone in the room. She is very friendly.35 year old Khushbu is also present. She is busy observing everyone, her so called fellow roommates, the receptionist, the general vibrations and the aura. She is very proud to get to the “room”.So where actually are they? Where one is worried of being spotted another proud and yet another totally blissful!! Let me give you a brief snippet of their lives.Nishant has had phenomenal performance in his academics. He has always topped the class. He has got into the best engineering college in the country. He has plans to set up his own start up dot com. He is introvert by nature but in this digital world who cares?! He is very close to his family and loves them dearly.Off late he worries a lot of the well being of his family members so much so that he checks on them almost every one hour. He believes every single minute that they are going to die. He feels there will be an earthquake or a road accident any minute and his family members will be affected. It took Nishant’s mom a lot of persuation to ask Nishant come along. He is worried on whether he should share this encounter in the room with his girlfriend at all.Betty is a wonderful lady with a heart of gold. She has a degree in chartered accountancy. She is the apple eyed girl of her father. She was responsible for setting up her paternal family’s business.  Albeit she found her prince charming sooner than expected and settled down for domesticity at the tender age of 21.All the same she is very knowledgeable and can have rich stimulating conversations from fashion to politics.Her problem is she is confused of her identity and family lineage. She believes she comes from royal family and nobody in her world is real. She believes that her mother is a queen who did not want to take care of her as she did not love her and in turn left her with her current foster parents. This of course is her imagination. She is more than happy to come to the room as she believes she is going to meet a queen.Khushbu is a young dynamic advertising professional. She has everything going right for her. She is blessed to have a supporting family,awesome children and a husband to die for. She is an omnivert if I may coin a behavioral term for her!! Well that means she is approachable and friendly yet does not blend in easily. She does not care what anybody thinks of her and speaks her mind. She is extremely self assured and leaves no stone unturned to fulfil her goals. She has a wide range of capabilities right from dancing, swimming to driving to name a few.All this suddenly disappears when she left by herself. She is always second guessing herself and is very anxious of being lonely. This has led to endless sleepless nights, frustration ultimately leading to bouts of violence. She feels so wretched at times that she contemplates suicide every second day. One minute she is happy next minute she is sad. She is totally clueless on what she will feel next. This roller coaster of emotions brings her to “the room”. She is glad she made it after a lot of contemplation.My guess is you have a guess by now (Pun intended) ! Welcome to the therapist’s clinic!! An issue which exists but is not easily validated. Socially there is a refusal to classify it as a disease. Unlike Blood Pressure, Diabetes, Heart Disease, Immunity Disorder, Cancer and so on and so forth there are no symptoms that the body will give out. Quiet contrarily here is absolutely no physical manifestation at all in all of the above cases.Technically they are not “crazy”, “mad” or “abnormal”. They are highly capable individuals. Well what separates them a little bit from most is that their thoughts run a tad more than us. Are not all of us a little weird? Do not all of us have some type of anxiety, imagination or lack of confidence. That’s all that’s about it. Would you give them company in the room without being apprehensive about judgment?It’s a actually a non starter. For example, a person has 2050 as ideal daily calorie intake. Then he must consume fat in the range of (20% of 2050 to 30% of 2050) which equals ( 410 to 615 ) calories from fat. One gram of fat has 9 calories so he should consume ( 410/9 to 615/9 ) = (46 to 68 ) grams of fat per day.Calculate your daily calorie intake from fat where 1 gram of fat = 9 calories.Ideal daily carbs intake :-Now you know your daily calorie intake from protein and fats, so to know daily calorie intake from carbs just subtract daily calorie intake from protein and fats with your ideal daily calorie intake and the remaining calories is to be consumed from carbohydrates.
