If you do not have any allergies or asthma and work in a building that has been deemed as high-risk, you will likely only need to test one time. This type of test is called an abatement inspection and it will determine if the building materials used to build the structure of the building were made with lead. The inspector will look over the exterior and interior surfaces of the building materials and Lead and Asbestos Testing.
If you work with asbestos and lead, you will most likely also be required to undergo water quality testing. There are several different types of water quality testing that can be done depending on the area where you work. The most common type of inspection is visual inspection. In this inspection, inspectors look at the inside and outside of buildings to see if there is a build up of asbestos and lead. They will look for it in the joints of walls, dust, and insulation.
Indoor air sampling is another type of inspection that is commonly performed. This type of inspection checks for lead and asbestos in the air. It looks closely at the quality of the air throughout the entire building and records all findings. These findings are then sent to a lab to be tested for levels of lead and asbestos.
There is also lead paint testing that can be done. When inspectors test the paint, they are looking for lead paint hazards that have been discovered through cracks in the walls or paint chips that have been observed around windows. Lead paint testing can also detect small amounts of lead dust that have been spotted on walls and furniture.
The lead dust sample will then be sent for gas chromatography to check for levels of lead and asbestos. The gas chromatography is used to check for heavy metals such as lead and mercury. If the level found is above the EPA health safe levels, lead paint testing inspectors will require a ventilation system is installed in the building. This is so the lead and asbestos sampling team can determine if further remediation will be needed or if the building can be declared safe. If it is determined that the level of lead and/or asbestos is below the safe health levels, the owner is required to take certain measures to prevent future exposure.
