Lexus has finally shown its hoverboard - a board floating above the ground. Moreover, he showed that this is not a joke or computer renders, but a real working prototype that is able to fly over water.
Scientists all over the world have been trying to create a working hoverboard since it appeared in the second film of the trilogy "Back to the Future" , which was released in 1989. Only 26 years later, Lexus made the version most similar to the "cinematic" board - it took the Japanese company a year and a half to develop it.
The hoverboard project for Lexus was assisted by the IFW Institute in Dresden and its subsidiary evico, which specializes in magnetic levitation technology and the development of industrial magnetic bearings.
The hoverboard looks really cool - bamboo deck and constantly rising steam from cooling the system with liquid nitrogen.
And everything was great, if not for one "but" - it is not yet possible to fly anywhere on a levitating board. Hoverboard requires a special surface, which so far only exists in a special "hover park" built in Barcelona.
Under the "hover park" there is a 200 meter magnetic track, which was made in Dresden. The magnetic field of the canvas, interacting with superconductors enclosed in special cryochambers (the temperature in them should not rise above -197C), maintains the distance between the hoverboard and the surface, allowing it to float above the ground.
Lexus is currently running dynamic tests on the hoverboard. For the tests, the company selected professional skateboarder Ross McGuran, who took first place in the world championships in 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2014.
“I devoted 20 years to skateboarding, but on a hoverboard and segwaysthat floats above the surface without experiencing frictional forces, I had to develop other skills, in particular, maintaining the correct body position and maintaining balance. This is a completely new experience, ”McGuran said. Indeed, unlike a regular skateboard, a floating board does not have wheels on which it rests, helping to maintain balance, at least in a static position.
It is possible that McGuran will remain the only person in the world who will be able to experience a real hoverboard. Lexus says that the flying board is just a prototype, created in a single copy and its serial production is not planned.
