The Lok Sabha approved the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill on 8 January 2019.

The Bill seeks to revise the Citizenship Act, 1955 to make illegal migrants who are Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, eligible for citizenship of India.

It will assign to those migrants who have immigrated India before December 31, 2014.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill isn't only for Northeastern state alone, but for all refugees in India. According to Amit Shah, the President of BJP says the migrants don't need to worry but it's the time for Intruders to worry. He also said that demography may change in Assam if the citizenship bill does not approve and it would lead tremendously trouble for Assamese people. Citizenship Amendment Bill will be applicable in the entire country and not just confined to West Bengal for NRC (National Register of Citizens of India) as West Bengal is a border state and it has an acute problem due to it.

According to the party (BJP), the main reason for the amendment is to give shelter to the neighbouring state people who are India by origin but are suffering religious persecution in other countries. The Bill states that such a long drawn process denies illegal migrants from there six minority communities of the three nations. "Many opportunities and advantages that may accrue only to the citizens of India even though they are likely to stay in India permanently".

From many years the state of Assam is suffering from illegal migrants. This bill is not only for Assam migrant nor for the people who are coming from neighbouring countries as a migrant for their welfare yet migrants coming from the westside boundaries of the country i.e. From Gujarat, Rajasthan, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and another state of India this bill is also for them.

The bill is very effective for Religious persecution migrants who are living in our country as they can apply for Indian Citizenship and later they can have the freedom to live in any state of India as a normal citizen. Although the responsibilities of these citizens will be charged on the country and not a particular state ( Responsibility will not be only Assam government or any northeastern government but will be of the whole country.

As Citizenship Amendment Bill state that it will maintain peace in Northeastern state by providing security, reservation of seats in local bodies, to protect their language, culture, social linguistic identity or heritage to protect or promote the creation of a good environment for the development and establishment of security and intelligence.

At one point of view, this bill criticises and violates Article 14 of the Indian Constitution as the bill states that citizenship will only be given to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhist, Jains, Paris and Christian from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan will not be treated as illegal immigrants. By distinguishing illegal immigrants on the basis of religion, the proposed law goes against the fundamental right to equality as India is a secular country with four pillars i.e. Justice, Liberty, Fraternity and Equality. According to the bill, one can now get citizenship in India by staying for 7 years instead of 12 years without valid documents. Isn't it that easy for illegal immigrants to get citizenship that easy. Yet this issue of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh feels insure to Assamese that it might alter the demography of the state. As this bill will give a chance for illegal immigrants to be citizens. If we imagine that 1.7 crore immigrants get citizenship then it would especially affect the bordering states like Assam,  West Bengal it will affect the resources of the state and people. It will be questionable that government will provide housing, education, health care, jobs to these immigrants lots of criticism are upon the government.

As initially, the bill was against Assam Accord yet the Citizenship Amendment Bill Act, 2019 is with the Assam Accord. It was signed on August 15, 1985. This Memorandum states that the Assam government have the power to protect them from illegal immigrants. The Bill would hamper what the Assam National Register of Citizens seeks to achieve in the state. At present, the bill is amended let's see what happens in the future will this bill will be beneficial to all or will be a curse to the country.
