It is a highly contagious liver infection caused by the hepatitis-A virus .It causes inflammation of the liver.


The agents of infection are  eating contaminated food, drinking contaminated water ,close contact with a person or object infected with the disease.


The symptoms appear after a few weeks, sometimes people are asymptomatic.But people who show symptoms have the following symptoms--


Nausea and vomiting

Abdominal pain near the liver area

Clay- colored stools

Loss of appetite

Low- grade fever

Dark urine

Joint pain

Yellowing of eyes and skin

A lot of itching

The symptoms are mild and generally go away after a few weeks.


Food and drink infected with fecal matter causes infection.

Eating food  handled by someone with the virus can cause infection.

Eating raw shell-fish from water polluted with sewage

Being in close contact with an infected person,using the person's clothes, utensils can transmit the disease

Having sex with an infected person


Travel or work in areas of the world where the disease is common

People with hemophilia are at a high risk

HIV positive people are at risk

People using illegal drugs

Workers in day-care centers


Unlike  other kinds of viral hepatitis, it doesn't cause long-term liver damage.


Peel and wash fresh fruits and vegetables on your own

Avoid eating raw or undercooked meat and fish

Drink bottled water while traveling

Avoid all beverages of unknown purity with or without ice

Get yourself vaccinated against hepatitis-A

Good hygiene and sanitation can prevent it


It is done with the help of blood tests.


No specific treatment except to give comfort and maintain nutritional balance,including replacement of fluids that are lost due to vomiting.
